2024 PPTU One Fly Contest
Where - Gunpowder Falls
When - June 1, 2024 2:00-6:00 PM.
2024 One-Fly Contest Winner: Robert Dietz
Our 1st Place Winner has bragging rights for 1 Year and their name posted forever on the PPTU Honor Roll of Winners!
Bob skillfully landed 6 trout, with a grand total of 34 ½ inches. He used a size 14 Tup’s Spider (a classic English fly pattern) and fished in the Bunker Hill Road area, upstream of the old bridge abutments.
Please feel free to ask him all about his winning fish stories. Bob may have had an unfair advantage though, he brought along Brody, a well-trained “fish spotting” dachshund, and his wife for moral support and to cheer him on (the strategy seems to have paid off).
Participants (in no particular order):
- Robert Dietz – Tup’s Spider, #14
- Frank Draper – Frenchie, #14
- Ron Kerrick – Partridge and Yellow, #16
- Jim Irons - Partridge and Orange, # 14
- Lou Reichel – Lou did not fish but was our Chef for the Outing
- Cliff Taylor – Blow Torch, #14
- Alan Williams – Blow Torch, #14
An Honorable Mention goes to Jim Irons in second place, with a total of 17 inches, and 3 trout to net.
Gunpowder River areas fished were Bunker Hill and Falls Road.
The weather was warm, in the low 80’s, and mostly sunny. The water flow was about 90 cfs, the river level gauge was at about 1.9 ft. and the water was fairly clear. The water temperature was 52 degrees Fahrenheit. I decided to go wet wading instead of gearing up with my waders. It was cold at first but wasn’t too bad. I did see a good number of rises but was committed to a wet fly. There were some insects hatching (sulfurs?).
At 6:00 we met back at the parking lot to register our catch totals and have hotdogs, baked beans, chips, cookies, and to share our stories.
I hope to see you again competing next year.
