If I left anybody out or missed spelled names I am truly sorry.
The day was great with temperatures in 50-60’s, blue skies with few clouds. The Patuxent River flow and water level were good and clear. The sticker bushes were there but haven’t fully grown yet. Saw hawks, woodpeckers, morning doves and lots of noise from frogs with yellow legs.
As far as hatches, did see lots on midges, BWO’s and a few brown stoneflies. No rising fish.
At about 1:00pm were all met back at Hipsley Mills for lunch of “hot” dogs, baked beans, cookies, brownies, and every type of chip. It was all good. Pete showed up with his army truck which took a lot of attention of many members.
Members seemed to be catching rainbows and brown trout, and one giant sucker, using egg patterns, San Juan worms, zebra midges, Patuxent special and some fancy jig names that I never heard of. Chuck used Sean’s advice and used a pink SJW and got a rainbow. Some of the largest trout range from 11’’ to 15’’. And the smallest trout (?) caught by Joe was so small it got lost in his palm.
I saw Jim and Mike enter the path from Hipsley Mills down to the river but never saw them again. I hope they made it out.
Please enjoy the attached pictures.
I hope all had a good time. To the new members, keep attending outings and you will get lots of advice from multiple members on how to catch trout.
Next outing will be at the Casselman River for the Mothers Day Caddis hatch (or grannom caddis) at the end of April.
