Conewago Creek March 2025
When: Saturday, March 22, 2025, 10:00 AM to 5:00PM
Where: Conewago Creek, near Gettysburg, PA.
Participants: David Engle and his wife Karen, Doug Johncox, Sean McCarron, Ray Miller, Bob O’Donnell, Lou Reichel, and Ron Kerrick.
There was a decent turnout of eight people for the chapter outing this past Saturday. We met at the PFBC Angler Access parking area on Zeigler Mill Road at 10:00 AM. Weather wise, it was a decent day for fishing. When we started, the air temperature was about 47 degrees and overcast with the sun occasionally making an appearance but no wind, so it didn’t feel cold. The water temperature was 44 degrees, clear, and the flow appeared to be at normal levels. Everyone started out fishing from the PFBC access lot, about half of the group went upstream and the other half downstream. Bob O’Donnell caught two Rainbows in the morning, but Lou Reichel was the morning champion with four fish to the net. A couple of the other members reported catching “fall fish”.
At 1:00 we met back at the PFBC parking lot for a lunch of grilled Brats and beans. However, the wind picked up at the parking lot and was gusting, so we ended up having to use the cars for a wind break during lunch. Dave’s wife Karen made some delicious brownies for us to enjoy, and other members brought pretzel sticks, potato chips and cookies to share.
After lunch, we continued to fish from the PFBC lot (nobody went over to the lower lot at the bowling alley). The afternoon remained overcast, windy, and the air temperature reached 57 degrees. Fortunately, at the stream, the wind was not bad at all (protected by the trees and being in a depression). The newest member of our group, David Engle, managed to catch 4 rainbows in the afternoon under the mentorship of Bob O’Donnel and Lou Reichel. Dave was using a black and olive Wooly bugger. Not bad for his first time fly fishing (I didn’t catch any trout this outing, only “Fall Fish”).
Bob O’Donnell ended up with 4 rainbows for the day, 2 about 14” and 2 about 12” all on pink sucker spawn. Doug Johncox also caught a nice rainbow using a Greenie.
Other than the wind at lunch, it was a nice day to be out in nature, to get some fishing in and to listen to the cries of the Hawks circling overhead.
